One of the police officers who were shot by their colleagues while manning the tally centre in Rukiga district has died. The deceased has been identified as Felix Ariho, a special police constable attached to Rukiga police station.
The incident occurred last night at around 11:15 p.m at Rwamucucu sub-county headquarters.
According to Elly Maate, the Police spokesperson for Kigezi region, the female police officer (suspect) identified as No.37372 Hamida Ssali who had been deployed at the quarter guard with others to restrict entrance in the tally centre at Sub-county main hall opened fire and shot Ariho multiple times.
She also shot Titus Muhumuza, a crime intelligence staff attached to Rukiga Police Station in the left leg and right hand. According to Maate, Ssali was chasing away a drunkard who was forcefully gaining access to the tally centre. In the process, she cocked a gun in rapid and accidentally shot her colleagues.
Our reporter who was at the tally centre says that Ssali was chasing away Amon Naturinda alias Rutare, LC2 chairman for Kitojo parish in Rwamucucu sub-county who appeared chanting over the victory of Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere, National Resistance Movement -NRM party flag bearer against opposition Forum for Democratic Change -FDC party Michael Kwarikunda Mbareeba.
Naturinda was forcing himself into the tally centre to dance in front of Kwarinkunda, arguing that it is the time to revenge against Kwarikunda because he had also de-campaigned him that he is not educated to be voted the LC3 chairman.
Maate says that the victims were rushed to Kabale regional referral hospital but Ariho died upon arrival as a result of overbreeding. Maate says that the Ssali was briefly detained at Rukiga police station but later today morning transferred to Kabale central police station for further management. He adds that the suspect faces attempted murder charges.
