The Rwandan government has finally repatriated the remains of a 38-year-old Ugandan national who died last month in Rwamagana government prison.

John Baptist Tumukorereki, a resident of Kyabuhangwa in Kamwezi sub-county, Rukiga district died in prison on May 16th, 2021. His body was handed over on Tuesday to Rukiga District authorities at the Uganda-Rwanda border of Kamwezi at around 7:00 pm.

According to records from Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS), a department that handles National Prison Services in the country, Tumukorereki was arrested while smuggling illicit drugs in Rwanda. Tumukorereki was on February 19, 2020, sentenced to seven years imprisonment after pleading guilty in Rwandan court.

According to the Superintendent of Prisons Therciss Nshimiyimana, the Deputy Director of Rwamagana Prison, while serving his sentence Tumukorereki developed malaria and was taken for medical treatment at Rwamagana district hospital after his condition deteriorated.

The handover was witnessed by the Mayor for Nyagatare district in Rwanda, Claude Mushabe, Ourikeria Muhindo Mwiine, and Rukiga Resident District Commissioner.

Nshimiyimana says that the delay to repatriate the body was caused by the process of following legal procedures through the office of the foreign affairs ministry.

Teddyson Niwagaba, the Kamwezi sub-county LCIII Chairman says that after receiving the body, they immediately prepared and buried it at around 9:00 pm to avoid mourners from congregating. Niwagaba insists that Tumukorereki was arrested in Rwanda in 2007 on accusations of smuggling waragi.

Niwagaba expresses concern over the continued defiance of the locals to cross to Rwanda. He says that as a result, people have continued to lose their lives.
