Rwenzururu King Wants Flying Squad Out of Kasese

The Cultural leader of Rwenzururu Kingdom Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere has called for the withdrawal of the Police Flying Squad from the Rwenzori region. He says the presence of the flying squad has fueled unrest in the region.

The demand came after a meeting with Captain Mike Mukula, the National Vice Chairman of the National Resistance Movement-NRM party.  Mukula paid a courtesy call to the King at his Buhikira Royal Palace in Kasese last evening. 

The meeting comes amid increased tensions in Rwenzori region following exchanges between civilians and security personnel that have resulted into loss of life and property over the last one month.

Mumbere says that up to five Rwenzururu royal guards have been killed since the unrest began, and that four others are detained in unknown places. He adds that the arrests are made by unidentified and non-uniformed personnel claiming to be security operatives.

Mumbere however said that people with sinister motives are fueling the Rwenzori crisis but hastens to add that the Kingdom of Rwenzururu is committed to the restoration of peace and stability in the region.

“There are wrong elements tarnishing the image of Obusinga by giving false information to government” Mumbere said.

Captain Mike Mukula equally called for a peaceful resolution of the conflicts in Rwenzori saying that over the years, the Bamba, Bakonzo, Basongora, and Banyabindi communities have lived peacefully.

He added that Government is to establish a permanent working committee between the two communities of Bakonzo, Bamba-Babwisi and others to defuse internal disagreement in the region.
