A group of activists in Arua under their umbrella “Save Ayivu Initiative’’ want Ayivu Division removed the city and be declared an independent district. Ayivu County officially became part of Arua City forming Ayivu Division on July 1st last year. The election of leaders at all levels in the division was held under Arua City.

The inclusion of Ayivu County to Arua city stemmed from a meeting between some people from Ayivu and President Museveni at State House Entebbe 28th July 2015, where they demanded that the whole of Ayivu is included on the City.

However, the Save Ayivu Initiative comprising of people from the seven Sub Counties that formerly formed Ayivu County now Ayivu Division in Arua City claim that they were not consulted. They claim that they found themselves smuggled into Arua City, which has prompted them to raise and demand a district status as opposed to being part of the city.

The group is currently collecting signatures from the over 600,000 people in Ayivu to make their case. Gasper Pirio, the Spokesperson of "Save Ayivu Initiative" told Journalists at a Press Conference that the Elders were not consulted.
