Police in Bushenyi district are holding the head teacher of Kakoni primary school Charles Bomukama and the Richard Ntundubire, chairman of the School Management Committee for misappropriating school funds.

The funds in question were received under Uganda Multisectoral Food Security and Nutrition Project, a World Bank funded initiative aimed at linking agriculture, nutrition, health and education through school-based demonstration gardens and nutrition education.

The two school administrators reportedly failed to account for 3.3 million Shillings meant for the project. Bushenyi District Production Coordinator David Bainomugisha says that the two were arrested on the orders of his office after failing to put the money to the intended purpose. They are held at Bushenyi Central Police Station.

Bainomugisha says that a team of district leaders visited the school in question to assess the progress of the project but found nothing on the ground to justify the expenditure.  He says that the two alleged that the money was instead used to clear outstanding loans, a provision which contravenes project guidelines.

Damiano Katwesiime the Bushenyi District Police Commander says investigations into the matter are ongoing.
