Security has blocked an emergency council meeting at Lamwo district headquarters. The district council speaker, Jimmy Amone had summoned the emergency council meeting to discuss irregularities surrounding the newly created Lamwo East constituency.

According to Amone, the councilors were expected to deliberate how the constituencies were demarcated basing on recommendations drawn from community members opposed to development contrary to the council resolution for the creation of two new constituencies instead of one.

He however, says the councilors where shocked after arriving at the district headquarters and found it cordoned off by armed military personnel who dispersed them. According to Amone, they later learnt that the soldiers were deployed on the orders of Lamwo Resident District Commissioner, James Nabinson Kidega.

It’s reported that the district Chief Administrative Office, the district chairperson and the speaker later sought audience of the RDC who told them that he was acting on directives from the Minister of Local Government who advised against the meeting.

Kidega told URN that wasn’t notified about the meeting, saying it also went against the ban on social gatherings as part of the Covid19 preventive measures.

David Ocan Kasisi, the Lokung Sub County councilor condemned the decision to block the meeting, saying the RDC’s directive was illegal. He said actions are embarrassing to government since they infringe on the supremacy of the district council.
