The joint
security forces in the Karamoja sub-region have expressed concerns about the
continuous attacks against military installations by the suspected
cattle rustlers.
On Friday, more than 12 suspected armed warriors attacked a military detach in
Kotido district but were repulsed by the security forces.
One UPDF
soldier was also shot dead during a cordon and search operations in Nakapelimoru village,
and on Sunday unknown suspected warriors ambushed a police vehicle on their way
from Soroti to Moroto district.
Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson says the warriors are
now turning their anger to the forces for frustrating their plans to raid. Longole
said warriors have resurrected and security is increasing their vigilance to
deal with the persistent attacks.
He said they
have issued new guidelines and heightened intelligence and effectively equipped
the forces as they implement their duty in the operations against illegal
firearms.

James Longok, a resident of Kakoliye ward in South Division, Moroto Municipality,
noted that the increase in attacks on military installations indicates that
there is something wrong that needs to be fixed in the forces.
Daniel Onyang, a driver in Moroto district, said the resurgence of insecurity
despite the presence of security forces makes him skeptical about the
commitment from the forces to end insecurity in the region.
On Friday, the police passed out 95 Anti Stock Theft Unit-ASTU forces who have
been undergoing training at Olilim Training School in Katakwi district.
They
were equipped with knowledge on drafting an operation order, laying ambushes,
radio communications during operations, use of PK machine gun and 12.7 mm
shooting, tactical combat, open-air combat, political education, intelligence
management, and respect for human rights, among others.
