Security Hunts for Missing Eritrean Footballers

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has today announced that security agencies have launched a serious search for the 18 Eritrean football players who absconded and disappeared in Uganda after they were eliminated from the on-going Cecafa Tusker senior Challenge Cup.

Uganda police has started hunting for 18 players of the Eriterian national team who vanished on Monday from Sky hotel in Ntinda. Ibin Ssekumbi, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson says that they have dispatched detectives to Kansaga and Muyenga in the city surburbs, where the players are suspected to be hiding. The Eriterian players vanished from their hotel after their team was eliminated from the ongoing CECAFA Tusker senior challenge cup. The Eritrean team was ejected at the group stage after drawing with Zanzibar 0-0, losing 3-2 to Malawi and falling 2-0 to Rwanda in their last match last Saturday. Patrick Ogwel, the Vice president of the Federation of Uganda Football Association in charge of youths says that they have confirmed that 17 players and the team doctor are missing.

Only five players and two officials left Sky Hotel this morning for their flight back to Asmara. Sylvia Nakamya, the manager of the hotel told URN that none of the players had returned to the hotel after they were reported missing. Edgar Watson, the FUFA Chief Executive Officer says that they have resolved to place the photos of the missing players in the newspapers so that they can be tracked down. In 2010, 13 Eritrian players vanished in Tanzania after the CECAFA championship. Several of the players found their way in to Houston, Texas under the US refugee resettlement program.
