Security forces have impounded a Fuso Truck carrying charcoal in Pader District as the government steps up efforts to enforce the charcoal trade ban issued by the President.

On Saturday, 26 April 2025, at around midday, the Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) Environmental Security Unit intercepted a Fuso truck between Ogom and Latanya Sub-Counties. The truck, loaded with charcoal, was heading towards Pader Central Police Station when it was stopped.

Pader District Police Commander SP Jackson Bogere confirmed the interception. He said the truck registration number UBF 163E was carrying charcoal, a business that is illegal after its ban. The suspects were later taken to Lira for further investigation.

The operation follows warnings by the UPDF after releasing nine trucks that had been impounded carrying charcoal illegally on Friday, in Lira City.

The government banned the charcoal trade in Northern Uganda in 2023 through a presidential order to protect the environment and strengthen security.

Earlier, at a meeting held at Lira Military Barracks, the Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, Major General Keith Katungi, warned that ignorance of the law would not excuse anyone from arrest.

Captain Edrin Mawanda, the 5th Infantry Division Information Officer, said the army will continue arresting anyone involved in illegal charcoal trade as they implement Executive Order Number 3 on the Environment.
