A heavy security deployment has sealed off the National Unity Platform-NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, a suburb of Kampala.

Roadblocks have been mounted around all access roads in the precincts of the NUP offices and the main old Kira Road. No pedestrian, cyclist or vehicle is allowed to use the Old Kira Road stretch from Kamwokya to Bukoto, an area now surrounded by heavily armed police, local defence and military personnel.

Earlier on, the National Unity Platform–NUP party declared today, a day of prayer and fasting, to dedicate Uganda to God, as President Yoweri Museveni takes oath for another term of office. Special prayers had been planned to be held at the head offices.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the party spokesperson said they declared Wednesday a day of prayer and fasting, to seek God’s intervention for the country at a time when its engulfed in human rights abuses, extrajudicial killings, and bad governance.

“As Museveni swears himself in, we as National Unity Platform shall be praying and fasting for this country, because we believe our land needs healing, people are being murdered every day,  democracy was kicked out this country,  we have only wicked people ruling over us, so we shall be praying for God’s intervention, Ssenyonyi said."

But one of the party administrators who preferred anonymity said that the military officers who pitched camp at their offices turned him and other officials away. Similarly, Gilbert Mugisa, a National Unity Platform diehard who had come to attend the prayers, says that several of his colleagues had their homes raided last night.

Ssenyonyi also told Uganda Radio Network earlier today that apart from closing the party offices illegally, most of their leaders' homes were surrounded by army and police personnel.
