Security has been stepped up in and around Hoima town, ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Day and night patrols have been scaled up in town and the surrounding areas. Charles Muballa, the Officer in charge operations at Hoima police station, says this has been prompted by a spike in violent crime in recent weeks where some people have been attacked and beaten.

Muballa explains that both motorized and foot patrols are being done targeting areas believed to be hot spots for criminals. He says also entertainment places and places conducting night prayers are being monitored.

On Thursday evening armed policemen on foot were seen patrolling areas along Butiaba road in Kiganda Hoima municipality. The area is notorious for robberies and assaults on people passing through the area by criminals.

The most recent incidents were an attack on Ivan Batuboine, a comedian and presenter on Bunyoro Television. There was also an attack on Fred Muziyu, a phone repairer who later died. Both incidents happened around Kiganda area about two weeks ago.
