A story quarry has caved in Sembabule district killing a miner.

The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Philip Mulindwa, a resident of Nsangala village in Mitete Sub County in Sembabule district.

Mulindwa met his death this morning when the quarry caved in as he was digging stones.

Felix Kakooza, also a miner at Nsagala stone quarry, says the soils caved in when his college was splitting stones in the trench.

Kakooza says he fled for dear life when he heard the rock cracking and tried to alert Mulindwa but unfortunately he didn’t hear him since he was deep in the ground.

Sulait Nganda Kasambya, parish representative at Mitete Sub County, says soils could have been weakened by water since Mulindwa had dug about 30 feet into the ground.

He says that they called police, which worked with residents to retrieve the deceased’s body from the ground.

Paul Kangave, the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, says they have handed over the deceased’s body to Sembabule health center IV for postmortem as investigations into the matter goes on.
