Senior Yumbe district officials arrested for Embezzlement

Audio 1

Two senior district officials in Yumbe have been arrested for alleged theft.

Moses Dalili Acting Chief Administrative Officer, and Agudonson Owino, the Chief Finance Officer, was arrested on Sunday in connection with the misuse of more than 200 million shillings.

The money was channeled to the district by the central government, for the renovation of classroom blocks, health centers, repairing of vehicles and purchase of fuel for various departments.

But the public accounts committee of parliament has found out that the money was not put to proper use and the two officials could not account for it.

Henry Aryang, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesman, says the two officers were arrested after they failing to produce proper documents of accountability to PAC. Some of the document presented to the two officers was found forged prompting the PAC members to order for the arrest of the two officials.

Aryang says the duo have been charged with embezzlement of public funds, causing financial loss and theft. Last month, Minister for ethics and Integrity, Dr Nsaba Buturo said civil servants who are found to have misappropriated public funds should be interdicted. The officers have also been summoned by parliament on May 3rd for more questioning.

Dalili has however denied any wrongdoing.
