Seven Children Suffocate to Death in Mubende

Kawala says the deceased were children of Muhammad Kaliisa, a resident of Kisenyi village in Kitenga sub-county. The children are said to have suffocated to death on Monday evening.
Seven children have suffocated to death in a grass thatched hut in Mubende district.

Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, Rachael Kawala identifies the deceased as Nauliat Nakato, Rahma Nakakooza (10), Mariam Mbabazi (10), Edris Serugo (6), Abdallah Kakooza (5), Asiat Nassaazi (3), Bashira Namata (3) and a three months old baby.

Kawala says the deceased were children of Muhammad Kaliisa, a resident of Kisenyi village in Kitenga sub-county. The children are said to have suffocated to death on Monday evening.

According to Kawala, the children were sleeping in the hut from, which they were cooking using a charcoal stove.

14-year-old Nakyanzi Madiina who survived the tragedy, says they all fell asleep and by the time she regained consciousness her siblings already died.

Kaliisa says that he was shocked to find his children unconscious state and when she called a nurse to check them he told him they were dead.

The deceased’s bodies were taken to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital before they were handed to the relatives for burial.

Kawala has warned residents against cooking from the same shelters they use to sleep, saying charcoal contains deadly substances that are harmful to human life.
