Seven Police officers in Mbarara have been arrested in connection with the escape from detention of 30 suspects.
On Sunday evening, 30 suspects escaped from Mbarara Central Police Station cells, under mysterious circumstances.
The two policemen-Alex Isa Ali and Thomas Watila who were guarding the cells at the time of escape have been arrested jointly with five other police officers who were manning the reception.
Polly Namaye, the southwestern region Police spokesperson, says police are investigating the circumstances under which the 30 suspects could have escaped without notice from the police officers on duty.
The nature of escape has become even more suspicious because there are no signs to show that the suspects applied any kind of force to break away from the cells.
Namaye says that none of suspects has been re-arrested so far.
Some of the suspects on the run include Hamid Besigye, Ndawula Ali Muwonge, Justus Kabagambe Justus, Mujuni Kabula, Tumwesigye Kiruhura, Binomugisha Mucunguzi and Nsabimana.
Most of the suspects had been arrested on charges ranging from defilement, rape to illegal possession of firearms.
She says the police are working with LCs in areas where some of the suspects were picked from to have them re-arrested.
meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police Major General Kale Kayihura has appointed Okoth Ochola former CID director and John Ndutse the commander of the Police standards unit to investigate the escapes.
He says that officers found to have aided the suspects to bring from the cells must be purnished irrespective of their positions in the force.
The two officers have also been instructed to carry out an audit in the management of all Police cells in the country and report to Kayihura in a month.
