Silverbacks Suffer Defeat in Build-up Game

The Uganda Basketball men's national team, Silverbacks lost 79-67 in a build-up game to Team Select on Friday night ahead of the 2017 Afro Basketball qualifiers.

In a hotly contested game played at the MTN arena, Lugogo Team select which comprised of an all star group of players took advantage of the Silverbacks bad defending and turn over's.

Although the national team were in command of the first quarter 18-14, the second quarter ended 31-29 in favor of Team select. In the third quarter the Silverbacks took a slim lead of 50-49 before team select took the day edging the Silverbacks 79-67.

Chris Omanye Basheke made a game high 20 points, while Joseph Chuma added 13 points for the Team select side.

For the Silverbacks side, centre Ivan Lumanyika made 17 points, while shooting guard Ben Komakech made 14 points.

In the ladies game played earlier, the national women's team, Gazelles stopped Team Select women 88-72 in a highly competitive game.The Gazelles won all the four quarters 21-14,48-29,66-50 and 88-72 respectively.

Gazelles' Ritah Immanishimwe made a game high 14 points, while Sarah Agena made 13points.For Team Select,Brenda Ekon made a game high 20 points while Florence Nanyonga added 18 points.

The 2017 Afrobasket Basket qualifiers will be held in Cairo Egypt, March 12th -18th this year. Uganda will play against seven teams of Egypt, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, South Sudan and Kenya and they must be among the best two if they are to qualify for the for the Afrobasket finals 2017 in Brazaville.

In 2014, Uganda Silverbacks qualified for the final for the first time as it came second after Egypt. Uganda lost to Egypt in the finals played in Kampala.
