A funding crisis has once again hit the National basketball team, the silverbacks. This means that the silverbacks will not participate in the anticipated first Window of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.

The National Basketball Team assistant coach, Mandy Juruni had earlier summoned a squad comprising both local and foreign-based players to prepare for the first window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 qualifiers slated for November 26 and 28, 2021 in Benguela, Angola.

However, a statement from the Federation of Uganda Basket Ball Association-FUBA, says that the team will miss the event due to the failure to secure funds to facilitate the players and the technical team.

“The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association FUBA on a very sad note wishes to inform you that Senior National Men’s National Basketball team the silverbacks will not compete at the FIBA World Cup qualifiers window 1 in Benguela Angola from 26th to 28th of November 2021,” part of the press release reads.

“FUBA was informed by the Government of Uganda through the National council of sports NCS that there was no money to support the team for this particular campaign,” the statement reads. Earlier on FUBA President, Naser Sserunjoji said they needed more than Shillings 380million to participate in the games.

Uganda is in Group A alongside Mali, Cape Verde and Nigeria. The silverback’s first fixture will be against Mali on November 26 before they meet Cape Verde and Nigeria on November 27 and 28 respectively. Uganda will have to finish in the top three if they are to advance to the next level. This is however not the first time, the basketball team is struggling with funding.

During the Afro Basket games in Kigali, the silverbacks spent their tournament operating on credit. It took the intervention of the first son Lt. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba to plead with the Education and Sports Minister to help the team clear the bill.
