Sironko district returned over 600 million shillings to the national treasury in the 2023/2024 financial year.

The money was meant to pay teachers and non-teaching staff at Professor Nabudere Memorial Vocational School in Buyobo town council.  The institute was constructed two years ago to honour the late Professor Dan Nabuderi and to promote the skilling of young people in the Bugisu region.

Alfred Wesonga the Sironko District Education Officer says that the money could not be utilised since the institution has less than five teachers on the government payroll and the other ten are not employed by the government.

Hebert Musika, the Secretary for Production also doubling as Nalusala sub-county to district councillor said that the recruitment of teachers should be expedited.

Nelson Kirinda, the Chief Administrative Officer says that he will write to the Ministry of Education requesting it to recruit more teachers and staff.

One of the management staff at Professor Nabudere Memorial Institute who preferred anonymity says that the institution needs more than 20 teachers and non-teaching staff.

He says that his boss the principal has written several letters to the Ministry of Education requesting staff recruitment, in vain.

He says that so far the number of students is reducing every year due to a lack of enough teachers who can teach different courses.
