Security has been beefed up in Sironko and neighbouring Districts, in preparation for the 57th Independence Day celebrations. Officers from the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces-UPDF and the Uganda police force have taken charge of key spots both in Sironko and the borders of Suam, Lwakhakha, Malaba and Busia.

The forces have for the past two weeks pitched camp in Sironko for parade practice ahead of the day, marked every October 9, in commemoration of the day Uganda gained Uganda's independence from the United Kingdom.

On that day in 1962, the Union Jack was lowered ending a reign of 68-years of Uganda as a protectorate under British Rule, and replaced by the Uganda-flag, a black, yellow and red striped fabric, with a crested crane in the centre. This year’s celebrations will be marked under the theme “Consolidation of National Unity, Security, Freedom and Prosperity.

Uganda People’s Defense Forces Spokesperson Brigadier Richard Karemire told journalists that UPDF, Uganda Prisons and the Uganda Police Force, attach a lot of value to the independence of the country and are working collectively to ensure that the events are outstanding. He asked the people of Sironko to embrace the celebration.
