Six Injured in Ruhinda Campaign Clashes

Six residents of Ruhinda County in Mitooma district are nursing injuries following violent clashes involving supporters of rival candidates.

 

 

The clashes broke out after supporters of Kahinda Otafiire, the incumbent Ruhinda County Member of Parliament attempted to block voters from accessing a campaign venue in Kizimbi Town Council where National Resistance Movement- NRM party candidates where scheduled to address a joint rally on Wednesday.

 

 

Six people were injured in the ensuing scuffle. They are Macklin Natukwasa, Apollo Rubeya, Robert Nuwamanya, Purutazio Mperirwe, Kagoro Timwenda, and Sanbalat Muhereza, all of Kashenshero Sub County. They sustained deep cuts on the head, chest while other escaped with broken arms and legs.

 

 

A vehicle belonging to Otafiire registration number UAN 007N was vandalized in the clashes. It took the intervention of Police to calm down the situation. Mackline Natukwasa and Apollo Rubeya are currently admitted at A and O Medical clinic in Kashenshero trading center with broken arms and deep cut on their heads.

 

 

Natukwasa told URN that they were attacked by the supporters of the NRM party candidates while on a drive to mobilise supporter for Otafiire, who is contesting as an independent. .

Otafiire has filed a case of assault and malicious damage to property at Mitooma Central Police Station. He faults Police for failing to apprehend the candidates behind the attack on his supporters.

But Jovah Kamateka, the incumbent Mitooma Woman MP and LC V chairperson Benon Karyaija counter accuse Otafiire's supporters of causing the confusion. 

Kamateka describes the incident as unfortunate and calls for restraint on the part of the voters.

Tension has been high in Ruhinda County since the 2015 NRM primaries where Otafiire lost to Captain Donozio Kahonda. Supporters of both candidates have repeatedly been involved in clashes at rallies and public functions.
