Snake Fatally Bites Toddler

The Tuesday afternoon incident occurred when Sofia Nantongo, the mother of the baby had gone outside her house to remove clothes on the wire.
A six-month-old baby boy has died in Mpugwe village in Mukungwe sub county Masaka district after he was beaten by a snake. It is alleged that the baby picked up the snake from the veranda of his parent’s home where it was crawling and put it in his mouth. The Tuesday afternoon incident occurred when Sofia Nantongo, the mother of the baby had gone outside her house to remove clothes on the wire.

Nantongo says she was terrified when she returned and found the baby putting the snake in his mouth.

She explains she looked for help to get rid of the snake and immediately rushed the toddler to a private clinic in Mpugwe trading center for treatment but he was pronounced dead on arrival. It is a common belief in Buganda that snakes can’t bite children without teeth.

Geoffrey Kahebwa, the Masaka District Police Commander has asked parents to take total care of their children and protect them from predators at home. He asks parents to be mindful of the environments where they leave their children to play to avoid such incidents.
