Soldier Killed in Road Accident

Private Alex Okello aged 23 years was on Monday evening confirmed dead after being involved in a road accident along the Jinja-Iganga highway.

Okello was riding a motorcycle registration number, UEY 985L also carrying his colleague, Private Stephen Atim when a Tata lorry registration number, UBG 509V knocked their motorcycle.

Atim suffered serious injuries and has been since admitted at the Iganga general hospital's emergency ward for life-saving procedures.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity say that both the lorry and motorcycle were running from the Jinja direction however, the yet to be identified lorry driver lost control and swerved, hitting the motorcycle.

The soldiers deployed at Buswale police station in Namayingo district with an aim of backing up police operations during campaign season were going to withdraw money at Centenary bank, Iganga branch before the accident.

James Mubi, the Busoga East police spokesperson, told journalists that the deceased has been taken to Iganga general hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Mubi adds that police is liaising with UPDF authorities to ensure that the deceased is given a descent burial.

He further says that the accident resulted from over speeding and police detectives have been dispatched to mount a search for the runaway driver.
