Soroti Diocese is mourning the death of Margaret Obaikol, the wife
to the former Bishop of Soroti, Rt. Rev. Charles Bernard Ebitu Obaikol. Obaikol
was Bishop of Soroti Diocese from 2000 to 2009.
A week ago, Obaikol lost his son Nathan Obaikol, who was buried on Saturday.
The news of Obaikol’s death on Wednesday shocked Christians who had seen her
four days ago at the burial of her son. She had a history of diabetes and
Rev. Beseri Otekat, the Chaplain of Bishop of Soroti Diocese, Rt. Rev. Kosea
Odongo, says that Margaret was rushed to Soroti Regional Referral hospital
while at her home in Anyara Sub County, Kalaki district.
According to Otekat, her condition deteriorated and was pronounced
dead around 3:00 am.
Freda Ochen, the President of Mother’s Union in Soroti Diocese and
close friend to Margaret says the region has lost a mother, friend, counsellor
and mentor. She remembers her as an advocate who preached and extended love to

Rev. Can. Pascal Odele, the Diocesan Mission Coordinator says the
death of Margret has left most of them in shock. He remembers the deceased as a
caring mother who mentored several spouses of the clergy. He describes her as a
role model to most families since she has been a pillar in the mother’s union
of the Soroti diocese.

Margaret Obaikol was elected President of Mother’s Union in 2008,
just a year after the retirement of her husband. She remained an advisor to
Mother’s Union, the position she held until her death.
