Medical interns at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital have staged a strike to protest the delayed payment of their feeding allowances and intimidation by the hospital director.

The 32 medical interns laid down their tools on Wednesday morning, saying they had tried to get redress from the hospital administration in vain. In their letter to Dr. Emmanuel Batibwe, the Director Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, a copy of which URN has seen, the interns list seven grievances.

They include threats of dismissal by the hospital director, none payment of their feeding allowances, failure to pay rent for three medical interns, none repair of broken facilities in the mess and abuse from  a senior medical officer, they didn\'t mention.

According to the interns, they have not been paid their food allowances since August 2015. Tony Justice Okwi, the President Medical Interns at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital spoke to URN about the strike.

Cue Out….Internship period,”//

According to Okwi, the Hospital only budgeted for 20 interns as opposed to the 32 who are deployed at the hospital. He says as a result, each of the interns receives Shillings 165,000 each month, instead of Shillings 250,000.

He says even then, the money doesn\'t come in time. Dr. Fred Kirya, the Coordinator of the Medical Intern at Soroti Reginal Referral Hospital feigned ignorance when contacted by URN on phone.

Cue Out:…. Same rumor,”//

Dr. Emmanuel Batibwe, the Director Soroti Regional Referral Hospital confirmed the strike saying they were working around the clock to clear the allowances of the interns.

//Cue in: “Interns came…

Cue Out…been patient,”//

He denied accusations of intimidating and threatening to discontinue the medical interns for pushing for their rights, saying he simply wants them to work hard since he doesn\'t want to pass out half-baked medical personnel.
