The Police in Kalaki district are investigating circumstances
under which a senior medical doctor and a lecturer at Soroti
University, Dr Wilfred Olila, was killed.
The body of Dr. Olila, a medical specialist in Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) was discovered dumped along Otuboi-Abalanga
road at Ogolai village in Ogwolo Sub County in Kalaki district Friday night.
The Police report in Kalaki indicates that his hands and
legs were tied with ropes.
“The face had dry blood which
had come from the mouth and nose and the head had a blood-stained bandage
wrapped around it,” reads part of the police report shared by the East Kyoga Regional
Police Commander, Damalie Nachuha.
She says that the body was removed and taken to Kaberamaido Hospital mortuary for postmortem. “Investigations are ongoing, however, the
public is hereby alerted to help the police with information regarding this
incident,” reads the report.
However, the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has condemned
the killing of Dr. Olila. In a press statement issued by the National Executive
Committee on Saturday, UMA said that the killing of Dr. Olila is a grave
injustice to the professional who saved many lives.
“We strongly condemn the violent attacks on doctors, who
selflessly dedicate their lives to saving others. This act of brutality against
a healer, who stood as a beacon of hope for countless lives, is a grave
injustice. As a community, we stand united in demanding respect and protection
for our noble profession,” the statement reads in part.
Dr. Olila, who hails from Lira City attained a Master of Medicine-Ear, Nose, and Throat from Makerere University in 2008 having graduated from the same University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the same institution.
UMA noted that Dr. Olila’s contributions extended far beyond
clinical practice; he was a visionary involved in various private initiatives
and a dedicated lecturer at Soroti University.
“U.M.A, the medical community, and the entire nation have
lost a remarkable treasure, an individual who epitomized service, compassion,
and dedication,” reads the statement.
Hassan Nyene, the Soroti University Spokesman says that Dr. Olila has been one of the most dedicated staff at the university.
