Soroti University Secretary Interdicted

Soroti University Secretary, Ruth Achimo has been interdicted over corruption allegations. The interdiction followed a directive from the Inspectorate of Government to the University Council Chairman Francis Xavier Lubanga.

The instruction signed by the Deputy Inspector General of Government Mariam Wangadya was written on January 23, indicating that the inspectorate had received complaints against the University Secretary which need to be investigated.

Munira Ali, the IG spokesperson says Achimo is also accused of interfering with the IGG investigation into allegations of corruption perpetuated by her office. She did not divulge details on the matter.

But Achimo told URN about the directive to suspend her from the office saying it's still being handled administratively. She described her suspension as unfair and threatened to petition the court to block her interdiction.

Achimo was recently in trouble for the illegal eviction of residents from a disputed piece of land in Aputon village in Arapai Sub County. The District Security Committee chaired by Soroti Resident District Commissioner, Filbert Ochailap ordered her arrest following violent clashes between the residents and court bailiffs who were hired to evict residents.

The land in question is under contention between Soroti University and residents. According to Ochailap, Achimo ordered the eviction without the knowledge of the university administration.
