  More and more shocks continue in the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as South Africa bundled out hosts Egypt 1-0 in the Round of 16.

Bafana Bafana who only made it to the Round of 16 as one of the best third placed four teams after the group stage scored late in the 85th through Thembinkosi Lorch at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday night.

The South African defenders played their hearts out to keep Egypt’s key players Muhamad Salah and Mahmoud Trezeguet out.

South Africa, winners of the AFCON trophy in 1995 will now face Nigeria at the quarter final stage. On Saturday the Super Eagles of Nigeria came from 2-1 down to eject defending champions Cameroon 3-2.

Earlier on Friday a 10-man Benin side saw off Morocco 4-1 on penalties after a 1-all draw in normal play. Benin will now face Senegal at the quarter final stage. The Teranga Lions of Senegal ejected Uganda Cranes 1-0.

On Sunday the surprise package in the tournament Madagascar will face DR Congo, while favourites Algeria take on Guinea in the other Group of 16 matches.

Nwanku Kanu, Nigeria’s ex-captain told URN on Saturday night that this year’s AFCON is producing a lot of shocks. “It was a shock to see Madagascar beat Nigeria. But we continue to see many more surprises and possibly we could get a team that has never won the trophy before,” added Kanu.
