A South Sudanese minor has drowned in an open pit in Palabek Refugee settlement camp in Lamwo District.

Two-year-old Nelson Caniwat was reportedly playing with other children in Zone 4 block 8 on Monday afternoon when he slipped and fell in the pit filled with rain water.

The Lamwo District Police Commander, Moses Eliau Osega confirmed the minor’s death in an interview with URN this morning.

He says a case was reported at Palabek Police post, which retrieved the minor’s about 5PM on Monday.

He says they kept the deceased’s body briefly at the Police post and handed it to doctors this morning postmortem to ascertain the real cause of death. According to Osega, the pit the minor fell in was dug for a latrine and left uncovered.

The Palabek Settlement Commandant, Julius Kamuza, says they are liaising with police to conduct investigations on what transpired.

Lamwo district is home to 47,000 refugees from South Sudan, the majority being women and children. They are residents in Palabek Ogili, Palabek Kal, and Palabek Gem settlements.
