The headmistress of Kyamugunga Umea Primary School is facing expulsion over school poor performance and neglect of duty.

Kyamugunga is a Moslem founded school located in Mateete Sub County in Ssembabule district.

Sofia Nansubuga has been the headmistress of the Muslim founded school for the last six years but the school management committee together with parents reached an agreement  to expell her because they were dissatisfied with her performance.

Abdul Sebuguzi, the board chairperson, accuses the headmistress of her absenteeism. He claims that she only appears three days in a week at the school without explanation.

Sebuguzi adds that the management has tried to find out why the headmistress behaves this way and to advise her to change without success.

He argues that the absence of the head-teacher means that the teachers do not feel any obligation to fulfil their obligations hence the school's repeated poor performance in the Primary Leaving Examinations.

Jaliya Namatovu, a parent, says that the school has not registered any first grade in the past 4 years and absenteeism of the headmistress is largely to blame. Namatovu says that the head teacher runs the school on phone instead of being physically there.

Rehema Ninsiima says because of the poor performance and lack of attention by the teachers, many parents have withdrawn their children and opted to transfer them to distant schools where they can receive a better education.

Ninsiima notes that in the last two years the population has declined from 600 pupils to 200.

She accuses the District Education officer Fulugensio Bukomwa of failure to penalize the head mistress despite parents repeated complaints.

However, the expelled head teacher Sofia Nansubuga has declined to comment on her poor performance. She defends her absences with an explanation that when she is away from the school, it is because she is attending educational meetings at the district.

Meanwhile angry parents have locked the headmistress’s office. This office serves as the school library too so this means teachers cannot access text books.

The Ssembabule District Education Officer Fulugensio Bukomwa says that he has sent a team to the school to ascertain what is going on.
