Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi has demanded Government to unconditionally release National Unity Platform – NUP party supporters jailed at Luzira Maximum Prison over what he described as trumped-up charges.

Ssenonyi visited the detention facility on Wednesday to interact with and ascertain the condition of the jailed supporters. Security operations arrested dozens of opposition supporters during the 2021 general elections and have since been locked up without trial.

The LOP cited Olivia Lutaaya, a mother of two who was arrested by plain cloth security personnel on May 8, 2021. Lutaaya has since been arraigned before the military Court Martial on charges of treason and illegal possession of military ammunition.

Cue out… that’s our demand.”//

Ssenyonyi rallied fellow legislators, especially from the ruling National Resistance Movement – NRM party with the majority numerical strength in Parliament to back the opposition in denouncing misrule and human rights violations by the government for the good of all.

Cue out… what needs to be fixed.”//

The LOP’s office released a list of 45 opposition supporters who are being detained at Luzira and Kitalya Mini-Maximum Prison. 15 of them are in Luzira including two female inmates; Olivia Lutaaya and Resy Birungi Nabbosa are being detained at Luzira Women's Prison while 30 others are in Kitalya Mini-Maximum Prison. The Opposition has also accused the government of double standards after a picture of the Kitgum District Woman Representative clad in military attire circulated on social media and was not arrested for the illegality.

Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the Army Spokesperson has since publicly apologized noting that the officer who offered the legislator the uniform has been arrested to face disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Deo Akiiki, the Deputy Spokesperson for Uganda's Ministry of Defense & Veterans Affairs has separately refuted reports that opposition supporters who were arrested on allegations of wearing ‘red beret’ are being detained by the military. Akiiki clarified that all the suspects have since been released.
