Students of St. Aloysius College Nyapea in Zombo district have staged a violent strike destroying part of the school administration block, computer laboratory and food stores. They rampaged on Tuesday night citing maladministration by their head teacher and being fed on poor quality meals.

The students also destroyed computers that were recently donated to the school by Uganda Communication Commission-UCC. Eye witness who declined to be named told URN that after the strike started after some of the students complained of missing meals.

He says that the students them mobilized and raided administration block, computer laboratory and food stores before attacking the headmaster’s home. They fled the school and left their luggage after the destruction for fear of being arrested. It is alleged that strike could have been planned some of the students who were sent back home for defaulting on fees.

John Bosco Opio, the head teacher of St. Aloysius College Nyapea has not yet commented on the strike as he was still locked up in a crisis meeting when URN visited the school. Emmy Kakura, the LC V Zombo district says they have been hunting for money to renovate the school, but the destruction caused by the students has worsened the situation.

Kakura, who also doubles as the district education secretary says that they have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the strike. Several plain clothes police officers and anti-riot policemen have taken over the security of the school. St. Aloysius College Nyapea was constructed in 1937 by Sacred Heart Brothers from USA.
