St. Balikuddembe Catholic Shrine has been burnt by the fire that started at Nakivuubo Parkyard Market. The roof of the shrine has caved in.

The fire spread to the shrine after bales of merchandise hang along the shrine's perimeter wall caught fire. The fire then spread to the roof which caved in destroying the altar and collection box.

Although the shrine was an incomplete structure, the damage has been serious.

Vendors have been allowed access to the shrine and its environs inspite of the fact that there are dangerously exposed electricity wires.

The vendors are trying to salvage what they can.

The shrine is located between St. Balikuddembe Market (formerly known as Owino) and Nakivuubo Stadium, leading to Kisenyi.

The shrine is a sacred spot for Ugandan Christians who venerate it as the location of the martyrdom of St. Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe. Balikuddembe was killed at this spot on 15 November, 1885. It is also the location of the martyrdom of St. Athanasius Bazzekuketta. He died on the spot on 27 May, 1886.
