St. Jude Primary School, Kakooge Closed after Morning Fire

St Jude Primary School Kakooge in Nakasongola district has been closed following a fire that gutted the girl's dormitory on Thursday. The fire that claimed the life of one pupil, is alleged to have started at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday burning down the dormitory that houses over 100 girls.

The deceased is identified as Favour Etenal. The matron Miriam Bihingirwe is hospitalized at St. Franciscan Health Center IV with injuries.

Charles Ssebyala, one of the parents welcomed the closure saying the pupils are still in shock and need time to recover from the impact of the fire and death of their colleague.

According to the pupils', the fire started from a lantern that was placed in the dormitory, and spread to the rest of the room from a mosquito net and a mattress. One of the pupils, Maria Regina Barungi says she sounded an alarm after detecting the fire, to wake her colleagues up.

Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Paul Kangave says that preliminary investigations point to the lantern as cause of fire. He added that the matter is still under investigation.
