Mutai To Spice Up 2016 MTN Marathon

The 2016 MTN Marathon will be graced by the presence of world bronze medalist and Olympic marathoner Solomon Munyo Mutai.

The 2016 MTN Marathon will be graced by the presence of world bronze medalist and  Olympic marathoner Solomon Munyo Mutai.

“Yes Mutai will compete in the the 21km race,” Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) President, Dominic Otuchet told URN on Saturday. Mutai who finished 8th in the 2016 Olympics marathon race will be joined by other elite runners from Kenya Timothy Keino and Sully Jebiwolt Kurui.

The marathon which will attract over 300 runners in the corporate category, 42km, 21km and 10km will start and end at the Kololo Independence ground.

Kenya's Eliud Kapchanga Cheptei who won the 42km race last year said she is here to defend her title. “I have been training seriously and hope to run a better time than I did last year,” she told URN. Besides the Uganda and Kenyan runners, Tanzania will also have athletes participate this year.

Top Ugandan female athletes like; Mercylire Chelangat and Janat Chemusto who took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil will also take part in the marathon that has cash prizes at stake. Former world 3000 steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru will also take part in the women's 42km race.

The 13th Edition of the marathon sponsored by MTN Uganda is geared towards raising funds for the implementation of improved sanitation facilities for pupils through the construction of environmentally friendly smart bio-toilet facilities in a number of selected public primary schools in the outskirts Kampala, in partnership with the KCCA.
