Jennifer Aryem, a State witness in the treason trial against opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, has been accused of carrying radio transmission equipment in the elaborate headgear she wears to court.
One of Besigye's lawyers, Caleb Alaka, made the claim at the opening of the High Court hearing in Kampala this morning. He said Aryem has been hiding radio transmission equipment in the folds of her large Ghanaian-style headdress in order to relay the proceedings of the case to interested parties outside the court premises.
Alaka also complained that since Aryem is a self-confessed former terrorist, it is possible that she may be carrying a grenade on her head. Aryem, a former fighter with the Lord's Resistance Army, told court last week that she was responsible for connecting Kizza Besigye to rebel leader, Joseph Kony.
She denied the allegation that she was hiding recording equipment in her headgear. She said there was nothing suspicious with the way she dresses, saying that she likes good fashion and design, which is why she wears elaborate West African dresses.
Presiding judge, Justice Vincent Kagaba, spared Aryem from undergoing a search this morning. However he said that in future she will be subjected to a head-to-toe search at the main entrance to the court in the presence of a member of the defense team.
Justice Kagaba warned Aryem to stop behaving in a suspicious manner and to stop using shortcuts to enter the courtroom. He adjourned the case until April 19th.
Jennifer Aryem was driven out of the court premises by a small saloon car, accompanied by a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number UAG 879V, known to be used by intelligence officers. Yesterday she was transported to and from court by a police car despite the fact that she is not under arrest or being detained by any of the security agencies.
