Government has given Steven Kaliba, the former Tooro Prime Minister Police escorts following his defection to the ruling National Resistance Movement party.

Kaliba abandoned the Go Forward camp last week following a closed door meeting with NRM presidential candidate, Yoweri Museveni in Kabale.

The former Tooro premier is contesting for the Fort portal Municipality parliamentary seat, as an independent candidate.

Since his defection, Kaliba is seen driving around Fort portal town with three armed police escorts, while five other officers are deployed at his Boma residence.

Asked why Kaliba is moving with armed Police escorts, Musa Tibikarana, the Kabarole District Police Commander, told Uganda Radio Network that they received instructions from the Police headquarters in Kampala to give him escorts. He refused to divulge more details.

Bakari Mugah, the Rwenzori Regional Police spokesperson says the Police escorts were given to Kaliba when he made  formal complaints at Fort Portal Police Station about threats on his life. According to Mugah, Kaliba claims that unknown people have been trailing him and have threatened to attack his family, following his defection from the Go Forward camp.

He however, also declined to give more details, saying Police is still investigating the matter.

Kaliba declined to comment on the threats on his life when contacted by URN, saying he will issue a statement on the matter soon.

Yakubu Gowan, the Kabarole District NRM party GeneralSecretary, welcomes Kaliba\'s defection, saying it could reduce Mbabazi\'s support in Tooro region.

He however asks Kaliba to step down in favour of Alex Ruhunda, the NRM flag bearer, if he is to be trusted.

Cue out:…stand down for flag bearer.”//

Kaliba has been a key figure in Mbabazi\'s camp. In November, he accompanied Mbabazi to his nomination and also organised his campaign rallies in Tooro region.

Kaliba joined Mbabazi when he retired from Tooro Kingdom after serving as premier for two years.

The former premier represented Fort Portal municipality in the eighth parliament. In 2011, he was defeated by the incumbent MP, Alex Ruhunda.
