An assistant storekeeper in Amuru district is under arrest for stealing iron sheets intended for former internally displaced families.
Geoffrey Olweny was arrested yesterday as he hid four of the iron sheets in a bush near the government store in Pabbo sub-county.
The Amuru Resident District Commissioner, Milton Odongo, explains the case:
//Cue in: “I got a telephone call …”
Cue out: “… to the law of this country.”//
The iron sheets are part of a larger government resettlement program. Since the program was initiated in 2006 it has been fraught with corruption at all levels. Senior district officials, mid-level local government staff and even drivers have been accused of theft of resettlement packages.
Geoffrey Olweny will be arraigned in court for his alleged crime this week.
