Heavy rains have blown off the roof of three major structures housing the newly constructed Lira garbage recycling plant. The incident occurred three weeks ago following a heavy down pour. The 2 billion shillings garbage recycling plant, which is located in Aler village in Ogur Sub County, was bankrolled by World Bank. The plant stopped working, shortly the roof was destroyed.

 

Emmanuel Oyuku, the Town clerk Lira Municipality says that they are unable to mobilize funds to renovate the plant.

Oyuku says that before the incident, the plant had built the capacity of the municipality to handle waste that has almost become difficult. He however, says that they have been able to secure market for the composite manure from the plant, which forced them to give it freely to residents.

Lira municipality is among the nine municipalities that benefited from the World Bank garbage recycling plant project. Others include Soroti, Gulu, Mukono, Kabale, Mbarara, Mbale and Jinja.
