Strong winds have today destroyed about 27 houses in Kyababinga village in Kasese Municipality, Kasese District.

The incident followed heavy rains being experienced across the district. Vicent Sakwira,  the area chairperson says seven of the affected houses were brought down by the winds that last over two hours.

He says they have not recorded any fatalities during the incident since it happened during afternoon hours today when people could easily escape to safety.

Mary Biira whose house is still under construction says the roof was blown off by the strong winds. She was alerted of the incident by her workers at the site and the area chairperson.

Another resident Enock Bwambale whose house was partly damaged says he was shocked to find part of the roof off he returned from the market.

Sakwira called on leaders to raise tree planting campaigns saying the area is prone to such disaster after people erased all the trees to put up structures.

By the time Uganda Radio Network (URN) visited the area, no district leader had yet reached the area to assess the situation.
