A support staff who spoke on condition of anonymity says the students were protesting delayed meals. The source also says that on the fateful day, lunch had delayed until evening due to lack of maize flour in the store.

He says that although the school administration had sent maize for grinding, students ran out of patience since they were hungry.

However, Lokedi says that the cause of the strike is unclear because the students had not presented their grievances to the school administration.
