The Accountant General, Lawrence Ssemakula has urged university students to take keen interest in public accountability issues. He made the appeal while opening this year's accountability week at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) City Hall this morning.
The week long activities started with a debate between university students on the role of youths in promoting the culture of accountability. The debate involved participants from Makerere University, Uganda Christian University (Mukono), Kyambogo University, Ndejje University, Nkumba University, Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, Makerere University Business School and Islamic University in Uganda.
Ssemakula said government is willing to align itself with young people in promoting accountability. He said student's suggestions to enhance accountability will be of vital importance in seeking effective and practical measures in building the culture of social accountability.
Ssemakula further asked students to constantly participate in discussions that will drive future recommendations in the sector.

This year's accountability sector review week is themed "accountability: a shared responsibility for effective service delivery." The theme, Ssemakula said is aimed at ensuring that as people pay tax, they should take keen interest in how it is used.

He said the sector's joint annual review conference will be held on Thursday and Friday at Speke Resort Munyonyo. Ssemakula said the conference will reflect on successes and challenges for the 2017/18 financial year.
It will also discuss how well the recommendations of last year's conference have been implemented by responsible agencies.
The accountability sector brings together state and non-state actors for the purpose of planning, developing, and implementing policies and regulations for a stable macroeconomic environment, transparent and accountable systems to facilitate economic growth.
