Ntungamo Sub County has issued an ultimatum to Ntungamo district to pay compensation funds from a piece of land.
The sub-county and district are embroiled in a conflict after the district refused to remit 67 million shillings to the sub-county. The money worth 104 million shillings was from the Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA as compensation for the piece of land in the sub-county.
The affected land hosts a market and former headquarters of Ruhaama County.
After a series of negotiations, the two parties failed to reach a compromise.
Through their lawyers, Ngaruye Ruhinda, Spencer and Company Advocates, the sub-county leadership is demanding 67 million shillings from the district within a space of 45 days from the 15th of February.
The sub-county leadership is also challenging the manner in which the money was deposited on the district account yet the sub-county had submitted all the required details to UNRA.
In a letter dated 15th of February, 2019 addressed to Ntungamo District Chief Administrative officer, the sub-county lawyers have now given the district a notice of intention to sue should the district fail to pay in the next 45 days.
Johnson Mwesigye, the Ntungamo Sub-County Chairperson says that the decision to opt for legal redress has been prompted by the reluctance of the district leadership.
The Ntungamo LCV Chairperson Denis Singahache insists that the land belongs to the district and no need for money will be given to the sub-county.
