Suspect Commits Suicide in Police Cells

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa Regional Police Spokesperson, says Oweka was locked up on Monday afternoon at around 3pm. He says officers found the suspect hanging from the ceiling of the cells when they brought in more suspects the next morning, adding that the suspect used his trouser to commit suicide.
A suspect has committed suicide in the cells at Bus park police outpost in Gulu municipality. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Patrick Oweka, a resident Layibi Go Down in Layibi division. Oweka reportedly hanged himself in the police cells when he was locked up for defiling his 17-old cousin.

Okema says the decision by the suspect to commit suicide came as a surprise as they hadn't gone far with their investigations into the allegations brought against him. A statement from the mother of the defilement victim shows that Oweka had been warned on various occasions to stop engaging in any sexual relation with his cousin.

The victim's mother says they even carried out traditional rituals to cleanse the duo of incest but he couldn't stop prompting them to resort to the long arm of the law.
