Suspect Commits Suicide in Police Cells

Isabirye reportedly used his shirt to hang himself in the police cells last night, a few hours after he was locked up for stealing a bicycle from a Boda boda rider in Namungalwe trading center on Wednesday afternoon.
A suspect has committed suicide in the cells of Kawete Police Station in Iganga district. The deceased is Dison Isabirye, a resident of Itanda village in Namungalwe Sub County in Iganga district.

Isabirye reportedly used his shirt to hang himself in the police cells last night, a few hours after he was locked up for stealing a bicycle from a Boda boda rider in Namungalwe trading center on Wednesday afternoon.

“Isabirye appeared to be in good spirits but it shook me that, he strangled himself using his shirt. His lifeless body was retrieved swinging in the police cell,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

His brother, Moses Buyinza, says he had gone to check on the suspect only to be informed of his death. “I had plans of securing police bond for my brother and I arrived at the police station only to be notified by the officer on duty that Isabirye had committed suicide,” he said.

James Mubi, the Busoga East Region Police spokesperson, says the deceased has been a habitual criminal and was bonded from three police stations in the district. Mubi says they have handed over the deceased’s body to Iganga general hospital mortuary for postmortem before it is handed over to his relatives for burial.
