Suspect Commits Suicide in Rubanda Police Cells

A suspect has committed suicide while in custody at Muko police station, Rubanda district. The deceased is identified as Gerald Wednesday, 19, a resident of Nyarurambi cell.

He was arrested on Wednesday, alongside another suspect Godfrey Owobugabe, with whom he allegedly breaking into a shop in Nfasha trading Center Muko Sub County, where he was suspected to stealing four million Shillings, according to Rubanda District Police Commander Tai Ramadhan.

The police spokesperson for Kigezi Region Elly Maate says that Wednesday, hanged himself using a piece of blanket. At the time of the tragedy, Wednesday had been left in isolation, while his co-accused stepped out for a meal.

The body was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.

This is not the first inmate to die in police cells in Kigezi region. In May 2017, Johnson Muhekyi, 50, a resident of Rutoma B cell in Rukungiri District committed suicide in police cells at Nyarushanje Police Station.

Muhekyi had been arrested in connection with the death of his two-month-old grandchild. The minor's body was recovered from a water tank.

In December 2016, Emmanuel Turyatemba was found dead inside the cells at Rukungiri Central Police Station where he had spent the night. Turyatemba had been picked up the previous in connection to the death of 63-year-old Edith Kemigisha on December 22, 2016.

Meanwhile, in Kiruhura district, Police are hunting for Lazarus Agaruraho, a resident of Kabuyanda village Kinoni Sub County who escaped from Rushere police cells. The suspect is accused of defiling pupil at Kabuyanda Primary School.

He is said to have connived with locals who forcefully picked the girl from her village and he took her up as a wife. The girl's parents reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest. However, he escaped on Thursday under the pretext of going to use a toilet facility as others converted for the suspect's parade, according to Kiruhura District Police Commander Patrick Omala.
