Suspected Congolese militiamen have staged three different attacks on Lake Albert in Buliisa district.

The attacks occurred near Bugoigo, Walukuba and Butiaba landing sites.

The Buliisa District Police Commander, Bosco Arop, says the attacks, which saw the militiamen confiscate 35 boat engines belonging to Ugandan fishermen occurred between Monday and Wednesday.

He says the militiamen placed Ugandan fishermen at gunpoint during the attacks and asked them to surrender their boat engines.

Arop says their Congolese security counterparts said they were not aware of the attacks when they contacted them.

//Cue in: “Approximately thirty because…

Cue out:…meeting with them.:”//.

He says the militiamen are demanding for Shillings 1.5 million for each of the impounded boat engines.

//Cue in: “There are situation…

Cue out…what they ask,”//.

Arop says the attacks have left Ugandan fishermen stranded since they can no longer venture into farming on Lake Albert for fear of losing their lives and boats to the militiamen.

The attacks on Ugandan fishermen on Lake Albert waters in Hoima Buliisa, Kagadi and Kikuube districts have escalated since February last year.

On March 1, 2019, three suspected Congolese Militiamen raided Kyehoro landing site in Kikuube district and abducted Pith Opio, a fisherman attached to Kyehoro landing site.

They crossed with him to Tchomia Landing site in Bunia district Ituri province in the Eastern part of the DR Congo together with his boat and a set of fishing nets.

The militiamen abandoned their dilapidated boat at Kyehoro landing site. The militiamen have since asked for ransom to release the fisherman.
