Suspected Thief Gunned Down

A police officer told URN that the suspect was carrying a sack full of tiles, which he is believed to have stolen from one of the factories in industrial park. The officer said they asked the deceased to stop as the 999 patrol vehicle approached him but he threw the sack and started running.

A suspected thief was gunned down by a joint team of police officers and soldiers on patrol in Kiwanga, Namanve Industrial Area in Mukono District on Tuesday morning.

According to preliminary information, the officers opened fire when they saw the suspect carrying a sack on his back around 3:28 am on Tuesday morning.

A police officer told URN that the suspect was carrying a sack full of tiles, which he is believed to have stolen from one of the factories in industrial park. 

The officer said they asked  the deceased to stop as the 999 patrol vehicle approached him but he threw the sack and started running. 

"We had no option but to shoot at him so as to disable him.  Unfortunately the bullet hit his back and he died on the spot," the officer said.  

 

The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the incident, saying investigations are ongoing to ascertain what transpired. 

"The district Police Commandant (DPC) Mukono and his team visited the scene in the morning and the officers have recorded statements. Investigations are ongoing," Owoyesigyire said.

Police is yet to establish where the suspect has got the titles from and where he was going since no case of theft had been reported by the time of filing this story.  

Police have handed over the deceased’s body to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem and possible identification by relatives.
