Suspected warriors have raided an informal village savings group and made off with member’s deposits worth Shillings 1million. The warriors broke into a semi house in Lomuria west in Kaabong town council on Sunday night and vandalized the cash deposit boxes.

Joyce Nachap, the vice-chairperson of the group, says that the stolen money was part of what they recovered from their members and were in the process of depositing it in the bank.  "It's really a  shock because we have been struggling to save amidst the current biting poverty caused by COVID-19 and now warriors come and collect all the money, “she said.

John Lokwalem, one of the members says that cattle rustlers are now turning to breaking into people's shops and saving groups after realizing a reduction in livestock. "We really don't know what will end this insecurity we have been losing livestock daily in Kaabong now the armed warriors are now turning to people's savings, “he said.

Peter Dengel, another member of the group, said that most members sold their livestock and decided to keep the money until the time the region becomes peacefully again to buy some livestock.

"Everything is now gone, keeping livestock is a security threat, now doing savings is also another threat where shall we go?” he asked. According to Dengel, the warriors have become untouchable, saying that they are moving freely with guns in Kaabong town council.

"Instead of Forces patrolling the town council it's now armed warriors patrolling the town council and break and loot any house they want without being stopped, “he said.

Micheal Longole, the Karamoja Region police Spokesperson confirmed the incident describing it as unacceptable. He said the joint Police and army forces are following the criminals and called for calm.

“We are following those criminals who broke and took money from savings group, “he said. According to Longole, the police already has clues that will lead to the arrest of the suspects.
