Chaos ensued in Tororo municipality on Tuesday evening as police battled rowdy protestors who stormed the National Resistance Movement party offices demanding the declaration of Jacinta Ayoo as Tororo Woman parliamentary candidate.

The protest came a few days after Arimpa Kigagi, the NRM Electoral Commission Vice Chairperson declared the Mineral State Minister, Sarah Achieng Opendi as the NRM party candidate for the Tororo Woman MP seat. This was contrary to an earlier declaration by Tororo District NRM Registrar, Joseph Kadokech who announced Ayoo as the winner of the party primaries with only votes from Tororo county.

The decision to overturn Ayoo’s victory didn’t go down well with his supporters who decided to storm the party offices singing liberation songs in solidarity with their candidate. They argued that their candidate has been cheated for long, saying they will not settle for less this time around.

This prompted police to fire tear gas to disperse the rowdy supporters.  Tororo District Police Commander, Rodgers Chebene, said they will not tolerate any illegal protest within the district. He advised the aggrieved parties to use the right channels to air their grievances.

The DPC had a verbal exchange with Ayoo who accused him of beating his supporters.
