Police fired teargas on Saturday evening in Kabale to break up a procession by Kenneth Jogo Biryabarema, the incumbent Rubanda LC 5 chairperson and aspirant for the Rubanda East Parliamentary seat.

Biryabarema was returning from Kampala where the National Resistance Movement-NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tango Odoi delivered his final verdict on the disputed NRM primaries for the Rubanda East Parliamentary candidate and declared Henry Ariganyira Musasizi winner of the contested polls

According to the final declaration by Odoi, Musasizi won the primaries with 22,863 votes while Biryabarema polled 22,635 votes. However, Biryabarema protested the declaration accusing Odoi of ignoring the recommendation by the NRM Elections Tribunal for a fresh of results from 16 disputed villages. Biryabarema vowed to contest against Musasizi as an independent candidate.

On Saturday evening, Biryabarema was welcomed by a huge procession of his supporters at Kabaraga hills in Kaharo Sub County on their way to Rubanda. However, the group was intercepted by heavily armed anti-police at Kabale- Butobere junction who used teargas to disperse the procession.

Joel Ntabu, Officer-in-Charge of Criminal Investigations Department at Kabale Police Station and another officer identified as Kenneth Asiimwe who led the officers told Biryabarema that his procession contravened the Public Order Management Act.

Police later blocked Biryabarema at Kabale- Bunyonyi junction and cut off Kisoro Highway to block him from proceeding to Bubaare Sub County. They instead ordered Biryabarema to use Kabale-Bunyonyi road and connect to his residence in Kagarama in Hamuhambo town council. Biryabarema faulted police for acting with excessive force yet his supporters were peaceful.

He vowed not to turn back despite the police intimidation.

Biryabarema rejected the results of the NRM primaries accusing his rival Henry Ariganyira Musasizi, the incumbent Rubanda East MP of conniving with the Rubanda District NRM registrar, Aggrey Monday, Party administrator, Dezi Christmas and Gaudioza Kabondo, an official from the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters to rig votes.

He particularly accused Monday of masterminding irregularities in the polls.
